CIFAR alumnus Paul Romer wins Nobel Prize

Paul Romer, an economist and former CIFAR fellow, will share the 2018 Nobel Prize in Economics with William D. Nordhaus. Romer’s Nobel brings to 19 the number of Nobel Prizes won by fellows and advisors who have been associated with CIFAR.

Charles A. Nelson and Gene Robinson (Child & Brain Development) were elected members of the US National Academy of Medicine.

Louis Taillefer (Quantum Materials) was awarded the the 2018 Kamerlingh Onnes prize.

Aniruddh Patel (Azrieli program in Brain, Mind & Consciousness) was awarded a Fellowship at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Studies.

Victoria Kaspi (Gravity & the Extreme Universe) received an honorary degree from UBC Okanagan.

Janet Rossant (Humans & the Microbiome) received an honorary degree from the University of Manitoba.

Stephen Scherer (Genetic Networks) received an honorary degree from Western University.

Siwan Anderson (Institutions, Organizations & Growth) won the John Rae Prize from the Canadian Economics Association.

Francis Bach (Learning in Machines & Brains) and Mark Schmidt (Learning in Machines & Brains) won the Lagrange Prize in Continuous Optimization.

Neil Turok (Gravity & the Extreme Universe) was appointed an honorary Officer of the Order of Canada.

Subir Sachdev (Quantum Materials) was awarded the Dirac Medal.

Ue-Li Pen (Gravity & the Extreme Universe) has received a Simons Investigator Award.

Alexandre Blais (Quantum Information Science) has been awarded the Rutherford Memorial Medal in physics by the Royal Society of Canada.
